about

For 14 years, composer/pianist Jason Moran has created music for performance artist Joan Jonas. In MUSIC FOR JOAN JONAS, Moran and Jonas come together to record excerpts of three of their major collaborations.

THE SHAPE, THE SCENT, THE FEEL OF THINGS

A performance by Joan Jonas, which responds to German art historian Aby Warburg’s essay about his visit to the American Southwest.
Text is excerpted from "Images from the Region of the Pueblo Indians of North America" by Aby Warburg. Originally created for Dia:Beacon

REANIMATION

A performance by Joan Jonas was inspired by the novel Under the Glacier (1968) by Icelandic writer Halldór Laxness and was originally created for dOCUMENTA (13).

THEY COME TO US WITHOUT A WORD

Jonas says "“Although the idea of my work involves the question of how the world is so rapidly and radically changing, I do not address the subject directly or didactically, rather, the ideas are implied poetically through sound, light, and the juxtaposition of images of children, animals, and landscape.” Originally created for the U.S. Pavilion in the 56th Venice Biennial.

THE SHAPE, THE SCENT, THE FEEL OF THINGS uses texts from Aby Warburg's "Images from the Region of the Pueblo Indians of North America".

REANIMATION uses texts from Halldór Laxness' "Kristnihald undir Jökli" aka "Under the Glacier"

THEY COME TO US WITHOUT A WORD uses fragments of ghost stories sourced from the oral tradition of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.
